Having conversations across difference

1–2 minutes

We ran a wonderful workshop at the Matthews Park clubrooms about Te Tiriti, local body elections and having conversations across difference with approximately 30 people attending on a Sunday afternoon.

We explored together the Māori wards referendum, the Common Cause model and the RAIN framework for having conversations when we have polarised opinions as well as next steps for local action.

You can download the whole presentation below as a pdf.

The Common Cause framework that we refer to is an internationally evidenced theory and methodology for having constructive conversations across differences. We’ve used the features of the Common Cause framwork to inform how we choose to communicate about Keeping Māori Wards.

In our conversations we hope to:

  • Shift to helpful narratives
  • Shift to focus on those who are persuadable
  • Shift to ‘all of us’ values
  • Shift to focus on a vision
  • Shift to connecting rather than describing

You can read more about the Common Cause framework here. We acknowledge all the important work The Workshop have done around effective social messaging in Aotearoa.
